Meritorious Professor Dr. Syed Arif Kamal obtained his PhD in Mathematical Neurophysics from University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan. Earlier, he obtained
his BSc (Honors) and MSc, both summa cum laude, from the same university. A
throughout First-Class-First-Position holder and 4 times Gold Medalist, Kamal
studied at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, United States as
Quaid-e-Azam Scholar and Indiana University,
Bloomington, Indiana, United States, obtaining graduate degrees. In 2016, he
retired from the service of University of Karachi as Dean, Faculties of Science
and Engineering
as well as Senior-Most Professor among the entire faculty of University of Karachi. He
served this university as full-time faculty for about 25 years, holding key
leadership positions as Acting Vice Chancellor, University of Karachi, Chairman, Department of Mathematics for 2 full terms of 3-year each as
well as Director, CEMB and MRCC. During
February 8 - May 22, 2016, he served as Chairman, Department of Health, Physical
Education and Sports Sciences, University of Karachi. He, also, held
academic positions as Convener, National Curriculum Revision Committee, Higher Education Commission and Member,
Expert Panel, National Curriculum Council, Ministry of Education (now Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training), both
coming under Government of Pakistan as well as
Convener, Subject Committee, National Testing Service Pakistan
(NTS). During 2012-2015, he was Member, Subject Committee for
Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences, NTS and played an active role in developing National Curriculum for Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences to be used in stnadardized tests for entrance into PhD programs. A very passionate educator, Prof. Kamal has played a proactive role in research empowering teaching for community development. Currently, he is Visiting
Faculty in Department of Physics, University of Karachi. In 1998 he founded the NGDS Pilot Project,
which is in its twenty-eighth year of operation. NGDS Stands for National Growth and Developmental Standards for the Pakistani
Children. A subproject of the NGDS Pilot Project is Sibling Growth Pilot Project
(SGPP), in which growth-and-obesity monitoring of all siblings in a
family and obesity monitoring their parents is performed. Since its inception,
Prof. Kamal has been serving as its Project Director. He introduced a new branch of mathematics, anthromathematics, on March 22, 2010 and served as Head of Anthromathematics Group in Department of Mathematics, University of Karachi, during March 22, 2010 - May 22, 2016. He has 77 papers in peer-reviewed journals to his
credit, some of which published in Biological Cybernetics, Journal of Biological Physics, Anthropological Notebooks and Chinese Journal of Physics,
as well as 170 conference presentations,
some of which published in IEEE Proceedings. He has given 79 colloquia, guest lectures and seminars, conference chair/co-chair in 5 conferences, chief guest in 6, presided 4, keynote speaker in 11, invited speaker in 12 and panelist (panel discussion) in 3 conferences. Further, he has delivered 16 memorial lectures, conducted 24 trainings, workshops and professional development short courses as well as organized 17 exhibitions, grand seminars, seminar series and conferences. 7 students have completed their PhDs and 6 their MPhils under his supervision and guidance (he acted as their Principal Supervisor).
He is a referee of international journals including Acta Paediatrica, Chemical Therodynamics & Thermal Analysis, Clinical Biomechanics
and Optics & Laser Technology
as well as national journals including Pakistan Journal of Scientific
& Industrial Research
and Proceedings of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences.
He serves on the editorial board of Bozok International Journal of
Sport Sciences as well as advisory boards of FUUAST Journal of Biology,
the Shield and the Sky. His work
is, mainly, in the area of childhood obesity (monitoring, definitions, solutions), childhood acute malnutrition, scoliosis in children and gait analysis of children as well as
modeling of human physiological systems (brain, heart, spinal column). He developed manual to obtain anthropometric measurements of
children and imparted training to faculty members of physical and
special education, working in Qatar University, Doha, Qatar, KFUPM, Dhahran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and
University of Karachi as well as Human Nutrition and Dietectics Program of the Bacha Khan University, Charsadda, KP, Pakistan. In the administrative sciences, he introduced out-of-the-box thinking as z axis in behavior-based interviewing, in addition to x axis (technical skills) and y axis (performance skills). In the social sector, he has written against marriages of still-growing couples as well
as promotion of peace activities through the medium of
sport. On December 31, 2020, he published a paper, in which he proposed a
model of operation of sport academies
during and after corona pandemic. His biography is listed in Marquis' Who's Who in the World, Dictionary of International Biography and 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the Twenty-First Century.
