Aims and Objectives
Aims and objectives of ETRPP may be summarized as:

a)

To identify and to groom talent at the school level

b)

To motivate young students to take up study of science

c)

To inculcate scientific thinking in young brains

d)

To train to seek innovative solutions to problems

e)

To help students determine their professional direction

f)

To counsel the students in choice of their undergraduate program

g)

To chalk out and to help organize programs aimed at creating science awareness in society


Program Duration
ETRPP 2013 Session shall run from Monday, July 1, 2013 to Friday, August 30, 2013. All meetings shall be held in Department of Mathematics, University of Karachi, Tel: 021 9926 1300-6 ext. 2293 (secretary), 2380 (direct) Directions

Program Contents
Basic training in scientific methodology through informal discussion of material placed on the website (http://www.ngds-ku.org/kamal - Professor Kamal's Articles on Science and Modeling) with a combination of experiment set up, data collection and data analysis. Program of 2010 Session PDF


Participants' Age and Maturity

ETRPP is seeking students, who have just written their O-Levels (and awaiting results), with the following qualities:

a)

Integrity/Desire to seek the truth

b)

Punctuality (arriving on time, not missing any sessions, completing assignments on time)

c)

Responsibility (checking of assignments for accuracy and for thoroughness, notifying in advance if unable to attend a session or unable to meet a deadline)

d)

A keen interest in learning new techniques and new concepts

e)

Willingness and ability to work in a team

Number of Participants
A minimum of TWO and a maximum of SIX students (3 boys, 3 girls) can be accommodated from any single institution.

Time Commitment
One contact hour (meeting with the ETRPP Coördinator) and three-hour preparation per week for the entire session. Each group is entitled to participate in ETRPP for one session only. In order to achieve maximum from the program, the students are strongly recommended NOT to enrol in any other program during the participation period.

Girls’ Group meets every Monday during 1007h - 1106h (10:07 a. m. - 11:06 a. m.) in Room No. 006
Boys’ Group meets every Monday during 1117h - 1216h (11:17 a. m. - 12:16 p. m.) in Room No. 006

Dress Code
Students must be in their respective school uniforms during all ETRPP sessions.

Benefits/Usefulness
ETRPP may provide the following benefits to participants:

a)

Could be used to satisfy community service requirements of IB or HSC (Cambridge University) Programs

b)

Selected students (who perform extraordinarily) are provided with letters of recommendation, for admission/financial assistance in undergraduate programs

c)

All the students, who complete the program satisfactorily (that means, more than 80% attendance in sessions, not more than 2 late arrivals), get a certificate of completion

d)

During their formal participation in the training session and afterwards, the students are eligible to attend ETRPP Popular Lecture Series

e)

May get preference, if desire to work on a research project of University of Karachi

Individual students may NOT apply for this program. Institutions willing to participate may send a letter of request on institutional letterhead to
Professor Dr. Syed Arif Kamal, Program Convener, ETRPP, University of Karachi, PO Box 8423, Karachi 75270. The institution should submit the following information:

a)

Name, paper mail address (mailing address), telephone and fax numbers of the institution

b)

Official website and e-mail address of the institution, if available

c)

Date of establishment of the institution

d)

Name of the principal/the head teacher

e)

Name of head of the science department

f)

Affiliation of the institution (the Aga Khan Board, IB, Karachi Board, University of Cambridge, University of London, etc.)


Each applicant must submit the following through principal of institution:

a)

One‑page vita

b)

Five (5) passport-size photographs

Name of the student should be written in BLOCK LETTERS on the back of each photograph.

One of the photographs submitted must be affixed to vita on the upper-right-hand corner.

c)

One photocopy of B form

d)

One photocopy of CNIC of father

e)

Life-history essay

f)

One page Statement of Purpose, indicating 5 things, which you expect to achieve from this program. The Statement should have 3 paragraphs. The first one indicating what you know, the second one outlining what you want to do and the last one relating the skills in the first to the objective in the second.

All information should be provided in the order given above. The deadline for receipt of nominations for the year 2014 has been established as Monday, March 24, 2014. Advance copy of nominations may be sent by e-mail. However, a formal submission on institutional letterhead is ESSENTIAL for completing the nomination procedures. At present, only the institutions located in Karachi may participate in this program.

TALENT TALK:
It's BLA's Night to Shine....
MISSION: TO THE STARS


Five students from BLA (Beacon Light Academy), Syed Adeel Kirmani, Walid Hussain Farooqi, Maham Irfan, Javaria Rahman and Ribha Salman are, currently, participating in a three-month-long "Early Talent Research Participation Program (ETRPP)" organized by Dr. Syed Arif Kamal, a professor at University of Karachi and a PhD in Neuroscience. The program extends from June to August and seeks to introduce to young minds the latest innovations in technology. It consists of visual presentations, highly intellectual lectures and ingenious guidelines as to the preparation of research proposals. The program fulfills its aims of encouraging the new generation to scrutinize things in a broader perspective and instilling in them methodical thinking so that they might keep pace with the rapidly-progressing world.
