J22: Physics of Scoliosis Screening in School-Going Children

Scoliosis, lateral curvature of the spinal column, effects children
during their growth period. If untreated it may disfigure the body,
cosmetically, and may effect the vital organs, such as the heart
and the lungs. Heavy school bags, if improperly worn, do not con-
tribute to scholarship, but to curvatures of the spinal column in
young children. A scoliosis screening program, involving visual
observation of back, forward-bending test and moiré fringe topo-
graphy, was formulated, which was quick, reproducible and inexpensive. These tests were integrated to minimize the number of false positives at the same time having a high degree of sensitivity. Our goal was to screen for curvatures of the spinal column at the same time minimizing the X-ray exposure to children.

Moiré fringe topography is simple, noncontact, noninvasive and nondestructive, photogrammetric technique, which provides three-dimensional map of a study subject/object (human body, precision instrument), without using the X rays or any other ionizing radiation. The technique of moiré fringe topography consists of photographing the study object through a specially constructed screen. Dark fringes are produced because of the presence of screen. Accuracy and precision of shadow-type, fishing-line, moiré-fringe-topography system were determined as 99.61% and 91.21%, respectively.

Global electrocortical activity of the human brain was modeled as a system of driven-harmonic oscillators. The equations, written in a covariant form, employed a generalized coupling, dependent on both the electrical poten-tials and their rates of change. Predictions were in terms of first-order shifts of the EEG frequencies in the pre-sence of weak, time-varying magnetic field, applied externally. A condition of impedance matching related the coupling parameters and the damping coefficients.

Moiré fringe topography is noninvasive, noncontact and nondestructive, 3-D optical imaging technique, which provides object-height maps. Edge-based algorithm may be used to study infinitesimal movement of the edge in the image plane. Application of the edge-based algorithm theory to the moiré contours enabled one to study
and to quantify motion along an axis normal to the plane of this image.

Moiré fringe topography and rasterstereography, noninvasive, noncontact and nondestructive, 3-D optical ima-ging techniques, are capable of providing height and curvature maps, respectively. In gait analysis and other movement activities the same position cannot be reproduced again. It is desired to record heights and curvatures of human trunk (e. g., selected points on the human back) at the same time. A technique for simultaneous moiré and raster recording was introduced using selective-optical filtering.

Moiré fringe topography is a simple, inexpensive, noninvasive optical technique, which provides a three-dimen-sional map of human body without using ionizing radiations. The usefulness of this technique is somewhat limited unless there is a method to obtain reproducible pictures. This paper reported the results of a study conducted in Malmö, Sweden to test a reproducibility method proposed by one of the authors (SAK). Natural water, often, contains high concentrations of calcium salts. When the water is heated these salts pre-cipitate out and form scale on the boiler surfaces reducing the energy efficiency of a system, and is difficult as well as costly to remove. Various chemical and nonchemical methods have been used to impede or delay the scale formation. One of these methods, magnetic water treatment, aroused great interest because of its ease
of use, reliability, and very low capital and operating costs. A mathematical model was proposed to explain the mechanism of this process. Full Text PDF
